m p a n Y e ngineering advanced enormously once it gained a foundation in physics. For medicine, the advance was even more profound once it gained a foundation in biology and chemistry. but leadership, although essential to all societies, has never taken the equivalent step from art to science. as a result, we still see leadership ranging in effectiveness from brilliant to inept and in morality from inspirational to demonic. i believe, however, that recent research into the workings of the human brain as it makes decisions, combined with recent research into the turning points in our own evolution, now offers the building blocks for a true science of leadership. in this article, i consider the biological underpinnings of leadership and their impact on organizations.
