Nato alla fine dell’Ottocento in una grande casa padronale di campagna dove la madre lavora come governante, George Ponderevo viene successivamente mandato a Wimblehurst in qualità di apprendista nella farmacia dello zio, un uomo ambizioso e determinato ad avere successo. Da qui approda poi a Londra, dove la sua vita viene improvvisamente sconvolta dal genio imprenditoriale dello zio Edward che lancia sul mercato la specialità farmaceutica Tono-Bungay, una miscela spacciata come ricostituente – di fatto una cialtroneria – che ottiene un enorme successo e crea dal nulla un rampante e fragilissimo impero finanziario. La storia di questa impresa si intreccia alla vita privata di George, al rovinoso matrimonio con Marion, alla sua movimentata vita sentimentale e ai suoi esperimenti di volo con gli alianti, fino al momento in cui la stella imprenditoriale e finanziaria dello zio si spegne in modo fulmineo e catastrofico…
Un grande classico da riscoprire: considerato uno dei massimi esempi di romanzo sociale alla Dickens, Il rimedio miracoloso, di stampo autobiografico, è una sagace opera panoramica su una società in disfacimento. Brillante, divertente, incredibilmente moderno, viene definito dallo stesso Wells come il suo libro più riuscito.
