Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to introduce a simple analytical technique based on scalarโ€wave approximation to study the modal characteristics of a new lightguide having a lemniscate of Bernoulliโ€type core cross section. This type of structure may be conceived as a practical situation wherein two cores are embedded in a common cladding. Using lemniscate cylindrical coordinates (ฮพ,โ€‰ฮท,โ€‰z) and the weak guidance boundary conditions, the eigenvalue equation is derived. From this equation, the characteristic curves have been obtained and plotted for some lowโ€order modes (ฮฝ=0). Furthermore, denoting the normalized frequency parameter as ฮฝ and the normalized propagation constant as bโ€ฒ, the variation (d(Vbโ€ฒ)/dV) is also obtained and analyzed.โ€ƒยฉ 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. With the use of the scalar field approximation a study has been made of a guide haยจing a shape of the lemniscate of Bernoulli as its cross section. This structure represents approximately the situation when two cores are embedded in the same cladding. This is often done in ( practice. In this case o

We make an analytical study of the modal cutoff behaยจior of a waยจeguide with an annular core cross section bounded by two nonconcentric circles. The characteristic and cutoff equations are obtained with the use of the weak guidance approximation. Numerical computations show that the number of modes
