DNA binding and photoinduced DNA cleaving properties of water-soluble naphthyridine derivative 1 were investigated. The photoinduced cleavage of DNA was studied by both PAGE and product analysis, indicating that the DNA cleavage proceeds via one* electron oxidation pathway.
