โœฆ Synopsis

In random-packed beds of spheres, there is an oscillatory variation of local voidage near the containing walls, which dies away into the bed. An expression is derived for this variation by first considering the periodic variation through a regular close-packed hexagonal array of spheres, and then introducing two randomising parameters. To obtain agreement with measured data, both the mathematical form and the numerical values of these parameters are subject to quite stringent restriction.
