β¦ Synopsis
The steady, oscillatory and creep/recovery behaviours of polymer-thickened oil-in-water emulsions were investigated with a cone-and-plate system, using a constant-stress rheometer, The emulsions were prepared using a petroleum oil and aqueous solutions of PRAESTOL 2540TR (an anionic polymer based on the polymerization of acrylamide). At low values of dispersed-phase (oil) concentration, the viscosity vs shear stress plots for polymer-thickened emulsions are found to be similar in shape to that of the polymeric suspending medium, although the viscosity increases with an increase in oil concentration. However, at high values of oil concentration, the zero shear viscosity of polymer-thickened emulsions shows a rapid increase with an increase in the oil concentration. The storage and loss moduli for the emulsion increase with an increase in the oil and polymer concentrations. At high oil concentrations, the polymer-thickened emulsions become predominantly elastic in nature. The creep/recovery experiments indicate that at high values of oil concentration, the polymer-thickened emulsions exhibit a significant recovery upon removal of stress.
