✦ Synopsis

A detailed assignment of the v(C0) region of [Os,(CO),,] and [Ru~(CO),~] in the solid state is obtained by using relative intensities of these vibrational modes in the i.r. and Raman spectra. A qualitative intensity prediction is possible by recognizing that the real crystal structure of these solids, space group P2,ln; C&,, may in fact be obtainable by a slight distortion of a more symmetric structure, space group 12/m; Ci,, with half the unit cell content.
