Abstract
Based on group vibrations, a vibrational assignment is proposed for the (P~4~W~8~O~40~)^12−^ ion in Na~12~P~4~W~8~O~40~ · 20H~2~O. The WO~6~ octahedra and the PO~4~ tetrahedra are found to be distorted in the crystal. Multiple bands observed for the stretching and bending modes of water are due to different strongly hydrogen‐bonded water molecules.
