Homogeneous isotropic cosmological models driven a t early timcs by a colicrent scalar [ield and the vacuuni polarization arc consitlrretl. Roth effects can lead t o the existence of a finite minimal value of the scale factor and an inflationary stage of expansion. The early as well as the late time behaviour of the cosmological evolution depends critically on the ratio of the contribution from thc vacuum polarization and the scalar field.
