✦ Synopsis

The mechanism of the reduction of zinc oxide in the solid state is studied by electrochemical and radiochemical methods. The results lead to the conclusion that inasmuch as the reduction of the zinc oxide takes place in direct contact with the cathode it occurs in the solid phase. The advantage of making zinc powder by electrolytic reduction of zinc oxide suspended in a neutral salt electrolyte is discussed.
