✦ Synopsis

A study of the metastable spectra from ethoxytrimethylsilane and the mass shifts of the deuterium-labeled species permitted the rationalization of the fragmentation mechanism for forming all major ions in the mass spectrum. A new mechanistic pathway for the formation of [Si(CH3)31+ (m/z 73) is demonstrated. A strong metastable ion for elimination of neutral acetaldehyde from the parent ion was observed despite the absence of a detectable daughter ion.

The unimolecular decomposition of 1,3,5-trioxane into three formaldehyde molecules has been studied thermally at eight temperatures between 523 and 603 K using mixtures highly diluted with Ar. Under these conditions, the only decomposition product detected by means of FTIR analysis was formaldehyde.
