✦ Synopsis
This issue represents one installment of the contributions received in response to our call for papers that include an undergraduate among the coauthors. Based on our experience with a special undergraduate issue of the Microchemical Journal in 1993 we expected a strong response-both in numbers and in quality. Indeed, the 1997 version of our undergraduate research collection fills two issues; many contributions received high praise from our reviewers.
We think these are very special papers. In most cases they represent the first submission from young scientists. Based on past experience with students who participate in undergraduate research, we can confidently predict that we will regularly hear from these investigators throughout the coming decades.
Particular praise should go to the faculty directors of these projects. It takes an unusually creative scientist to select projects that simultaneously contribute to the discipline and the training of undergraduate students. We are pleased to continue to provide this outlet for their work.
