✦ Synopsis

The use of the binomial distribution for the numerator and the negative binomial for the denominator in prospective studies leads to an unbiased estimate of relative risk and an unbiased estimate for combining experiments. Optimal sample sizes for groups are calculated and confidence intervals for the relative risk are presented. The efficiency of plans are evaluated by comparing variances and coefficient6 of variation.

Key w d 8 : Binomial ; Negative binomial ; Relative risk ; Combining estimates of relative risk.

In many observed processes, data is fit well by a common distribution except for an excess of numbers of the zero class. This may be due to a threshold phenomenon in which no response occurs until a concomitant variable reaches a certain level, and the response is governed by the common probability

## Abstract Epidemiologic studies on adverse health effects of cellular telephone use have assessed exposure either by self‐reported use based on questionnaire data or by using data on subscriptions for a cellular telephone provided by network operators. With the latter approach, subjects are miscl
