## Abstract The characteristics of an F‐shaped‐probe feeding a triangular patch antenna with a small‐size ground plane have been simulated and measured. A −10‐dB impedance bandwidth of 47% and an average gain of 6.4 dBi have been achieved. The phase of the far‐field over the bandwidth has been stud

Abstract
This article firstly introduces a compact printed patch antenna with ultrawide bandwidth. The performance is achieved by placing the radiating patch above a rectangular notch cut in the finite ground plane edge. This fabrication provides an ultrawide impedance bandwidth and reduced antenna dimension by suitable separations of the patch from the notch edges. A practical design and experimental results for the requirement of WiMax 802.16e are presented. Moreover, using the proposed antenna as the complementary elements, a dual‐polarization ultrawideband antenna design is implemented and studied. The experimental results indicate that not only the original characteristics are preserved from the dual‐polarized integration but also a larger than 25‐dB isolation is achieved throughout the operating band. In addition, omni‐directional radiations in the azimuthal plane are achieved to make the proposed dual‐polarization antenna more suitable for mobile communications. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
