โฆ Synopsis
Two-photon photoacoustic spectra of acetone&, and _ds have been recorded using a pulsed laser in the 3ptn Rydberg transition region (332.2-338.7 nm for two-photon excitation). Comparison of the acetone-h, and -d6 photoacoustic and twophoton resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization spectra shows an intensity reversal between the (3p,,+n)'A, and (3p,+-n)'A, tmnsition origins. The dramatic increase in the 'A, state -and to a lesser extent for the 'Bz state -photoacoustic signals requires effXent radiationless/dissociative channels for these states, not present for 'A*. The intensity effects are interpreted through the 'AI state having substantial n'ta valence character in contrast to almost pure Rydberg character for the 'AZ state.
