✦ Synopsis

The rate of nitration of chlorobenzene in 70.2 per cent sulphuric acid has been determined in the two phase system and also in each phase separately. Data on the solubility of chlorobenzene in the acid phase has also been obtained.

The rate of nitration in the organic phase is negligible while that in the acid phase is first order in nitric acid and first order in chlorobenzene, with an activation energy of 16,970 & 100 cal moF.

The rate of nitration in the two phase system is first order with respect to nitric acid and has an activation energy of 20,920 & 100 cai mol-I. A value of 3960 & 200 cal mol-' is obtained for the heat of solution of chlorobenzene in 70.2 per cent sulphuric acid. The conclusion is drawn that the rate in the two phase system is kinetically and not mass transfer controlled.

The two phase nitration of toluene has been studied between 15 and 35Β°C using 70.2 per cent sulphuric acid containing nitric acid at an initial concentration of 0.032 mol I.-', and a 1 : i' volume ratio mixture of toluene and chlorobenzene. The results are consistent with the kinetic and mass transf
