Abstract

The difference between the triplet‐triplet and singlet‐singlet absorption spectrum of naphthalene has been measured at 90°K using a newly developed computer controlled spectrograph. Good spectral resolution has been obtained and a strong band was found in the ultraviolet region. Recent calculations are compared with the triplet‐triplet spectrum of naphthalene.

The polarized excitation spectrum of the triplet-triplet absorption of some hydrocarbons has been measured by the method of photoselection. Advantages offered by the polarized excitation spectrum for further polarization work are briefiy discussed.

Transient aburption bands are observed with naphtbakne in solution at 3200-3400 A. in the nme region a~ in the gas phase. It is shown that they do not belong to the naphthalene TT spectrum. Weak and structured 'IT bands are observed between 4300 and 6500 A with methyl derivatives as well as with nap

The triplet-triplet absorption spectra of a number of aromatic molecules were shown to be broadened in low temperature matrices formed by aromatic solvents (toluene, 4kopropylbiphenyl) as compared with those in aliphatic solvents (ethanol, methylcyclohexane, triethylaminc). The effect is exponential
