Pool boiling heat transfer characteristics of liquid 3He were measured for the first time using the 3He circulation system under saturated vapour pressure at about 1.5 and 2.0 K. The heat transfer surface was a flat plate of 6 mm diameter made of OFHC and set upward. The results show that the A T de

β¦ Synopsis
The transient heat transfer between single-crystalline Ge chips and liquid helium is investigated during the application of light pulses with different optical power to the Ge sample. The strong temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity of Ge conveniently serves for monitoring the temporal behaviour of the sample temperature during the input of optical energy. After a certain time interval following the beginning of the light pulse an abrupt rise of the sample temperature is observed. This time interval is much longer than the thermal time constant expected for the sample. This abrupt rise of the sample temperature can be understood in terms of the onset of film boiling. The observed onset time of film boiling and its dependence upon the heat transfer power density agrees reasonably with earlier results by Steward.

Pool boiling heat transfer from a square copper heating surface to liquid helium has been investigated experimentally. The study includes both nucleate and film boiling regimes, the measurements of maximum and minimum heat fluxes and superheats of the heating wall in the pressure region from 0.445 u
A correlation is presented that describes the behaviour of time dependent recovery from film boiling in He II. In a one dimensional heat transfer experiment, the recovery time from the film boiling once heat generation stops is observed to be a function of the energy applied to the heater during fil
