Studies continue to reveal that Asian Indian Americans tend to underuse counseling or terminate counseling process prematurely. Sociocultural differences and the implications for training counselors are presented.
Asian Americans come from different cultures, traditions, language groups and countries. The term Asian/PacirE IsZanders refers to diverse Asian groups such as Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Asian Indian, and other Asian groups (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1981). Asian and Pacific Islanders remain the fastest growing ethnic group in the U.S., with numbers rising from 9 million in 1992 to a projected 40 million in 2050 (U.S. Department of Commerce, 1995).
