✦ Synopsis

We calculate the time-dependent decay of the surface-plasmon-coupled molecular fluorescence from a SOIU~IOII of drffusmg dye molecules near a metal. Measurements of this slgnal for an ethanol solution of Tb acetylacetonate next to a Ag f&n agree well wwth the calculation when effects due to the non-local response of Ag are included We report here the results of a study which shows that surface-plasmon (SP) coupled molecular fluorescence in a &ffusing solution is a sensitive probe for monitoring interFacIal phenomena. Pnsm couphng techruques are used both to excite the dye molecules near the surface and to monitor lrectly their decay into surface plasmons [l-3]

The time dependence of the degree of polarization has been measured in the fluorescence decay of "single" rotational levels of ' B3u pyrazine follou%tg escitation by a 5 ns laser pulse. The emission is depolarized non-esponentialiy in time. This behavior is attributed to dephasing processes by which
