Upon adsorption of CO2 at Tr 90 K on Ni( 1 lo), the molecule weakly chemisorbs and undergoes a geometrical distortion, i.e. it bends into a nonlinear geometry. This geometrical distortion is triggered by electron transfer from the substrate to the molecule, accompanied by formation of an anionic CO;
