✦ Synopsis

Quantum-mechanical calculations of three-body contributions to the dipole polarizability in linear and triangular He3 clusters are presented. Account is taken of electron correlation. For short distances, three-body terms can be large, dependent upon geometry, and although for distances greater than the KUI der Waals minimum these three-body terms are small, their effect may still be of importance for dense fluids because of the number ratio of three-to two-body terms.

An accurate representation of the three-body potential for the ground state of neutral He3 has been obtained by fitting to high quality ab initio data. The static electric dipole polarizabilities and second-order hyperpolarizabilities of several bare boron clusters have been calculated with density functional theory. The average second-order hyperpolarizability γ av reaches a saturation limit of about 50,000 a.u. already with B 5 for a given type o
