✦ Synopsis

*“I was running when I saw my father kill himself. Not that he jumped off a tall building or stepped in front of a truck but – professionally, personally – what I watched him do was suicide.”

*The last person that professional bodyguard, Charlotte “Charlie” Fox, ever expected to self-destruct was her own father, an eminent surgeon. But when Charlie unexpectedly sees him admitting to gross professional misconduct on a New York news program, she can’t just stand by and watch his downfall.

That’s not easy when Richard Foxcroft, always cold towards his daughter, rejects her help at every turn. The good doctor has never made any secret of his disapproval of Charlie’s choice of career or her relationship with her boss, Sean Meyer. And now, just as Charlie and Sean are settling in to their new life in the States, Foxcroft seems determined to go down in a blazing lack of glory, and take Charlie and everyone she cares about down with him.

But he has not bargained on Charlie’s own ruthless streak. And when the game turns deadly, Charlie will need to stake her life and her father’s against a formidable foe.

From Publishers Weekly

At the outset of Sharp's gripping third Charlie Fox thriller (after Second Shot), the British soldier-turned-bodyguard, now settled in New York City and working for an exclusive close-protection agency, is shocked to see an interview with her father on the morning TV news. A prominent U.K. orthopedic surgeon, he is under investigation after the death of one of his patients. Despite a large rift between Charlie and her parents, she decides that she can't stand by and allow her father to become a scapegoat for what she learns is a coverup involving a shadowy government agency and the testing of a controversial new medical treatment. Joined by fellow bodyguard and boyfriend Sean Meyer, she encounters some of the most ruthless criminals of her career as she seeks to exonerate her father. Sharp expertly captures the frenetic energy of New York without sacrificing her trademark British wit. Charlie is as tough as she is damaged, and readers will kill for the next installment. (Oct.)

From Booklist

Readers who like spirited heroines should check out Charlie Fox, a former British army soldier who now spends her days protecting others. In this third installment (after Second Shot, 2007), Agent Fox’s assignment hits a bit too close to home. Her physician father, who has long disapproved of his daughter’s line of work, finds his reputation in jeopardy when he’s wrongfully linked to an American patient’s death. Charlie’s father may have a cold demeanor, but his skills as an orthopedic surgeon are beyond dispute. Who would want to discredit him—and why? The subsequent kidnapping of Charlie’s mother offers some answers and ignites a cat-and-mouse game, in which Charlie and her security-agent boyfriend seek to protect Charlie’s parents at all costs. Fox is a satisfyingly complex character, the survivor of a brutal gang rape and multiple gunshots that have wounded both her body and mind. But this latest entry has too much domestic drama and not enough suspense. --Allison Block
