β¦ Synopsis
The successful separation of corticoids, estrogens, and pregnanetriols by thin-layer chromatography (TLC) on silica gel, aluminum oxide, and calcium sulfate (l-5) indicated that this technique could readily serve as a rapid means of separating adrenal steroids extracted from plasma. Studies were undertaken therefore, to develop the techniques for separation of various adrenal corticoids, including l%hydroxycorticoids, by thin-layer chromatography.
In the course of this work, it became apparent that, under certain conditions of chromatography, change in migration of the steroids occurred. This change in migration suggested the possibility of molecular modification during thin-layer chromatography. The migration of 18-hydroxydeoxycorticosterone, moreover, varied depending on whether the steroid was chromatographed as a single sample or in mixture with other corticoids.
