β¦ Synopsis
The free energy of formation of manganous oxide has been determined by measurement of the emfs of the cells and NilNiO 1 ThO,-YO,., electrolyte 1 MnlMnO FelF%.s,O I ThOl-Y01.5 electrolyte I MnlMnO in the temperature interval 923-1273Β°K. The results agree quite closely with calorimetric data for the reaction Mn + @, + MnO. The study thus demonstrates that the thoria-based oxide electrolytes can be used at temperatures around 1000Β°C for the study of the thermodynamics of oxide systems having oxygen dissociation pressures of about lO-% atm.
