✦ Synopsis

Different shapes of swelling curves, by which the coexistence of a gel and solvent is described, and the corresponding spinodal curves are discussed. The relations are derived with the assumption that the system is binary. The conditions for the existence of an inflexion point of the swelling curve are deduced. An inflexion point with a horizontal tangent leads to relations which are the same as the conditions for a critical point in binary uncrosslinked systems.

## Abstract A photometric method for measuring the swelling of polymers in solvents from zero time to equilibrium has been described. The method consists in following continually the growing β€œshadow” of the specimen as it imbides the solvent. Equipment details and method of operation are discussed.

Alkylation of phenylacetonitrile by 1-bromobutane with 50% sodium hydroxide and a polymer-supported phase transfer catalyst proceeds fastest when the phenylacetonitrile is added to the mixture before the 1-bromobutane. Alkylation of phenylacetonitrile (PAN) promoted by aqueous sodium hydroxide and q
