Abatraot-The relation between preferred orientation and thermal expansion coefficient was investigated for a wide variety of pyrolytic carbons, including materials used for free-standing bodies as well as those used for coating nuclear fuel particles. Over most of the range of preferred orientations studied, the data deviated from the simple Bacon relation, indicating that a portion of the crystallite c-axis expansion is accommodated. The amount of accommodation was found to depend on the density of the carbon. A high-temperature lattice parameter determination established that intercrystalline elastic restraints do not contribute significantly to the accommodation.

The accommodation is therefore attributed to porosity. The thermal expansion coefficients of a variety of carbons used as coatings for nuclear fuel particles were found to be insensitive to neutron irradiation at 89&106O"C to exposures of 2.2 x 10" to 2.4 x lO*i nvt (E >0.18 MeV).
