✦ Synopsis

DE HALAS and YOSHIKAWA(') have suggested that when graphite is irradiated with fast neutrons, an equilibrium state of disorder may be approached. Evidence for the disordering of graphite by fast neutron irradiation has been well documented. (2) The existence, however, of an equilibrium state of disorder cannot be firmly established without systematically demonstrating, using single-phase materials, that poorly ordered carbons can be made more crystalline by neutron irradiation.

Recent studies in which a wide variety of pyrolytic carbons were irradiated with fast neutrons have provided evidence for irradiation-induced ordering of poorly crystalline carbons. In Fig. 1 the irradiationinduced changes in the apparent crystallite height, AL,,

## Abstract Thermal relaxation behavior of a mechanically induced macroscopic orientation of the mesogenic groups in a side‐chain liquid crystalline polyacrylate was investigated using timedependent polarized infrared spectroscopy. It was found that a complete relaxation occurred only at temperatur
