✦ Synopsis

The structures of isoimide cycles in polyimides were elucidated from i.r. and 13C NMR spectra of N-phenylphthalimide and N-phenylphthalisoimide. Using i.r. and gas-chromatographic data, conversion of isoimide cycles to the imide form was studied as a function of temperature. This process is irreversible, precluding the presence of the isoimide form at high temperature.

## Abstract A dehydrochlorination apparatus is described for studies of the early stages of the thermal degradation of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), combining good reproducibility, high accuracy, and a low detection limit. The evolved hydrogen chloride is absorbed in water and the electrical conducti
