β¦ Synopsis
Optical excitations of semiconducting systems, like bulk crystals, semiconductor surfaces, or molecules, are strongly affected by the screened Coulomb interaction between the excited electron and hole. This leads to the formation of bound exciton states at low energies, and to a significant modification of the optical spectrum at higher energies. We present a recently developed computational ab-initio approach which, based on many-body perturbation theory, allows to investigate such correlated electron-hole excitations and to evaluate the optical spectrum. The approach applies both to extended as well as to low-dimensional systems.
