## Abstract The valence bands (VB) of remote oxygen and remote nitrogen plasmaโ€treated polyethylene and polypropylene were studied to determine changes in the basic polymer structure. Each of the polymers showed a characteristic valence band profile, which retained much of its original shape after

In the energy range O-30 eV several broad valence bands are iesolved. The top of the highest filled band is located at 7.0 + 1 eV below the vacuum level. The full aidth at half maximum of the corresponding photoelectron peak is about 4 eV.
