A theoretical study of the origin of the intense satellite structure observed in the carbon (2s) derived region of the X-ray photoelectron spectrum of eayfene is reported. The structure is found to arise because of a high!y correlated motion of the electrons in the fin& ionic state.

In the energy range O-30 eV several broad valence bands are iesolved. The top of the highest filled band is located at 7.0 + 1 eV below the vacuum level. The full aidth at half maximum of the corresponding photoelectron peak is about 4 eV.
