โœฆ Synopsis

The X-ray photoelectron spectra of the anhydrous copper(I) and copper(U) carboxylates Cu(O,CR), (R = Me, Et, Pr", Ph; n = 1 and 2), have been investigated and the copper 2p,,, and 2~~~~ and carbon 1s binding energies measured. An apparent correlation of copper 2p binding energies with metal oxidation state has been found. The copper 2p peak widths are much broader for the copper(H) carboxylates than for the copper(I)

carboxylates, a feature attributed to multiplet splittings. Intense satellite peaks are observed only for the copper compounds.

Copper nbutyrate shows evidence of X-ray photoreduction to copper(I).
