✦ Synopsis

The influences of compression and tension on the diffraction angle 20 of the principal amorphous X-ray diffraction maximum of bisphenol A polycarbonate have been measured as well as the change of the lattice constant of crystalline polycarbonate under compressive stress. The values obtained have been compared with the deformations of the specimens which were measured simultaneously. The results show that the structure of the amorphous polycarbonate is not homogeneous and that the principal amorphous X-ray diffraction maximum is given by regions which have a higher stiffness than the rest of the polymer. The moduli of elasticity of both regions were estimated; an explanation for the mechanical behaviour of polycarbonate, especially its high impact strength, is suggested.
