It is demonstrated that linalyl acetate is biosynthesised via the non-mevalonate (l-deoxyxylulose phosphate) terpene pathway in the plant Mentha citrata. The incorporation of isotopically labelled DL-[3-2H3]-alanine and [6,6-2H2]-D-glucose has revealed that five of the deuterium atoms of 1-deoxyxylu
