Abstract

Narrative techniques combined with psychoanalytically oriented exploration of group processes can enhance the training of mental health professionals. This paper demonstrates their implementation in multicultural training. It is suggested that a study group can become a β€œresonant box” – a transitional space where experiences of immigrants, as conveyed in their narratives, meet the reactions of the listeners and together create the β€œsound” of the narrative. Narratives may resonate in contents as well as in processes: in the thoughts and emotions that students express, in their unconscious reactions and resistances as well as in unconscious group processes. When recognized and explored these contents and processes may become a source of insight into the experiences of the narrator. Copyright Β© 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
