✦ Synopsis

A two-phase model that incorporates axial dispersion in both phases, as well as interphase mass transfer, is used to simulate the transient response of bubble columns. The time-domain solution is obtained by inverting the Laplace domain solution via a Fourier series approximation technique. Using the solution obtained, the validity of model simplifications that have appeared in the literature is evaluated by comparing the predictions of those models. These simplifications are found to give low errors only under &eci~ conditions. A parametric study of proposed pulse experiments in bubble columns simulating Fischer-Tropsch slurry reactors showed that model simplifications are invalid for these experimental conditions. Both the internhase mass transfer and the gas-phase axial dispersion affect the pulse response of the gas phase significantly.

By means of a kinetic model the stability of the flow in ga-liquid dispersions is studied here. Such problems as the regimes of flow and the domains of stability are examined. In the heterogeneous regime of flow, a domain of collective flow and a transition zone are observed. The model allows us to

## Wmxwsow and ARMSTRONG [l] have derived an expression which predicts the response of plate compositions in a distillation column to step changes in feed composition. This theory is valid up to moderate values of time but cannot be used to predict the changes in composition when the column approa
