โœฆ Synopsis

Measurements of the thermal conductivity of SX-5 graphite from -100ยฐC to 2500ยฐC are reported. The temperature range was covered by three techniques: a transient technique at the lower temperatures, a series-comparison method for the intermediate range, and a radial heat flow method for the high temperatures. The radial heat flow method, when used with anisotropic materials, requires a two-dimensional heat flow analysis of the data; the approach which was used in this work is described. At temperatures above 250ยฐC the conductivity appears to follow a l/T relation, which is characteristic of graphites in particular and of Umklapp thermal resistive processes in general.

A calculation of the basal plane thermal conductivity of graphite with no adjustable parameters is presented. The graphite crysta! is treated as a set of noninteracting two-dimensional lattices and only in-plane vibrations are considered. The rtlaxalion time is determined through the diagonal matrix

The thermal conductivity of neutron-irradiated reactor-grade graphites made from needle coke (H-327), Gilsocoke (H-328), and isotropic petroleum coke (H-451) was measured between 22 and 800ยฐC. Irradiation temperatures were between 600 and 16OO"C, and fast neutron fluences ranged up to lO22 n/cm\* (E
