A new layered cuprate Pb 2 Sr 2 Cu 2 TaO 8 Cl has been successfully synthesized and identified by X-ray diffraction analysis. The compound crystallizes in the hematophanite structure with the space group P4/mmm. The lattice parameters of a ‫؍‬ 3.8921(1) A s s and c ‫؍‬ 15.3835(4) A s s were obtained
