The dianion derived from the oxime of furfuraldehyde (1) reacts with electrophiles at the 5-position of the furan ring; subsequent hydrol$is of the oxime provides a useful method for the synthesis of 2,5_disubstituted furans.

## Abstract The reaction of ketal‐functionalized nitroalkanes with α‐oxoaldehydes, promoted by Amberlyst A21 and followed by acidic treatment of the mixture with Amberlyst 15, avoids isolation of the nitroaldol intermediates and leads directly to formation of the desired furan derivatives.
