โœฆ Synopsis

The ratio of the MPI current from a circularly polarized to a linearly polarized laxer is used to assign the 6.2 eV two-photon allowed Rydberg state of transhexatriene to an 'Ag(rr(au) + 3p(au)) state. This state could be involved m contiguration interaction with the rAg n-valence states. A simple explanation is proposed for the fadure to observe the other twcphoton Rydberg transitions (rr(a,) + 3p(bu)) predicted by theory to be located around 6.2 eV_

A new lEau 3~,,~ Rydberg state is found in the three-photon spectrum of benzene at 56080 cm-', near the previously knou n r Asu state. The vibronic structure of these states is found to be intertwined and an esS vibration previously assigned to the rAzu state is suggested to belong to 'Ezu. This vib
