✦ Synopsis

The existence of a prominent subpicosecond birefringent response in CS2 is demonstrated_ New data are presented in an attempt to reconcile previous conflicting literature reports on this effect. We demonstrate how it is possible to obscure the rapid medium response by performing measurements with sufficiently high-intensity laser pulses.

Optical anisotropy was created and detected in diluted solutions of all-trans p-carotene in n-dodecane by femtosecond pump and probe pulses. At low pump intensity the anisotropy is due to photoselection produced by one-photon absorption, and it decays with the lifetime (8 ps) of the lowest electroni

## Abstract The electric field in a single mode, YAG laser beam has been used to induce orientational birefringence in solutions of tobacco rattle virus, DNA, heparin, and hyaluronic acid. Using this laser in its β€œfixed‐__Q__” mode, laser pulses were generated which persisted for up to 200 ΞΌsec in
