The phenolic alkaloid atheroline was extracted from the bark of Atherosverma moschatum (1) and vas shown to yield the known but unnamed alkaloid I (2) on methylation of its phenolic group.

The latter group was tentatively assigned to C, from its pronounced acidity, and from n.m.r. and i.r. evidence (1).
