Inulin was pyrolyzed in air to produce di-D-fructose dianhydrides (DFDAs) in -26% yield, three of which were identified by MS, NMR, and comparison with literature data. The mass spectra of the per-0-trimethylsilyl derivatives of the DFDAs are discussed. A mechanism is proposed for the formation of D

The crystal structure of 3,4,3',4'-tetra-0-acetyl-6,6'-di( triphenylmethyl) -di-D-fructose anhydride I (1) has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are monoclinic, space groupP2, witha= 16.399(2), b=9.091(2),c= 17.946(4)81, p= 103.66(l)", V=2600(2) A3, and Z= 2. The stru
Inulin and D-fructose are quantitatively converted into a mixture of Mructose dianhydrides on treatment with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride. Of the six dianhyd~des isolated, five are known compounds, whereas one, P\_Mructofuranose @-r>-fructopyranose 2,1':3,2'-dianhydride, has not been described hither
The crystal of cycloinulohexaose trihydrate, C,H,0B.3Hz0. is trigonal, space group R3, with unit-cell dimensions a = 24.688 (17). c = 6.477 (3) A for a hexagonal cell, 2 = 3. The molecule, which consists of six (2-I)-linked B-D-fructofuranose residues, has C, symmetry. The conformations of two D-fr
