The straggling in the ranges of PO a-particles, caused by solid matters, was measured by means of an ionization-chamber, combined with a linear pulse amplifier.
By using foils of the material with an air-equivalent smaller than the range in air, the straggling parameter of the ranges was determined for Al, Ni. Ag, Au and mica. For the elements with a high atomic number, the values measured of this parameter are not in accordance with those, deduced from the theory.
