✦ Synopsis

Measurements

were made of the specific ionization of PO a-particles in hydrogen and helium by means of an ionization chamber, combined with a pulse amplifier.

The Bragg curve obtained for hydrogen differs from that determined by J o 1 i o t and 0 n o d a with an electrometer and is in agreement with the measurements of the loss in energy by M a n o. The extrapolated ionization range in hydrogen amounts to 172 mm, in helium to 215 mm. The stragglingparameters of the ranges in the gases mentioned are resp. 2,1 and 2,7 mm, after correction for the thickness of the source.

The straggling in the ranges of PO a-particles, caused by solid matters, was measured by means of an ionization-chamber, combined with a linear pulse amplifier. By using foils of the material with an air-equivalent smaller than the range in air, the straggling parameter of the ranges was determined
