Abstract

In the determination of pH values of standard buffer solutions in anhydrous methanol by the method of the National Bureau of Standards, it appeared that the pH values found by using a cell with a silver chloride electrode differed from the pH values found by using a cell with a silver bromide electrode. The assumption that this difference was caused by the use of an incorrect literature value for the standard potential of the silver bromide electrode, was checked by an experimental determination of this potential, viz. by determining the difference between the standard potential of the silver chloride electrode (which is supposed to be correct) and the silver bromide electrode.

The new value found for the standard potential of the silver bromide electrode in anhydrous methanol is ‐0.1375 volt against the normal hydrogen electrode.
