β¦ Synopsis
Recent interest in the physiology of water balance and heat regulation in the camel has emphasized the need for further knowledge of the structure of the skin and of the sweat glands in particular '57). Although some information is available on the skin of the camel, there seems to be no comprehensive study of the subject. The unfortunate statement that the skin of the camel has no sweat glands (Leonard, 1894) has not gained wide acceptance, and later authorities on the camel clearly state that sweat glands are present (Leese, '27; Curasson, '47; Droandi, '36). However, no detailed description is available, in spite of the important role of the sweat glands in heat regulation and water balance of a desert animal.
The manner of attachment between epidermis and dermis in the camel is referred to briefly by Simon ('51), who illustrates the surface contour of the dermis and the basal border of the epidermis in metacarpal skin. He also states that the epidermis of the camel is extraordinarily thin. Purohit and Singh ('58) describe in detail the poll glands utilizing material from 10 camels. They quote from Leese ('27) who states that the poll glands are present only in the male.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) is used to measure spatially localized diffusive and iontophoretic transport rates in hairless mouse skin. Molecular fluxes within individual hair follicles are quantified by measuring the rate at which redox-active probe molecules emerge from the follicle.
