In 1949 the suggestion was made that the guanine analog, 8-azaguanine, exerted an intense inhibition of the growth of Tetrahymena pyriformis by reason of its incorporation into the nucleic acids of the ciliate KIDDER, DEWEY, PARKS and WOODSIDE 1949).
