โœฆ Synopsis

The sensitivity behaviour of three types of high elongation strain gauge has been established experimentally. The gauges were bonded to a variety of testpiece materials and calibrated in uniaxial stress fields of tension and bending. It is shown from loading and unloading cycles within the plastic range that three sensitivity factors can be identified. These relate elastic, plastic and total resistance charlge responses to their respective strain components. The variation in each sensitivity factor with applied strain is examined both experimentally and theoretically. Gauges operate most reliably when their separate responses are co-linear.

Most low cycle fatigue testing is carried out under total strain controlled limits and the plastic strain component is determined retrospectively after the test by considering the hysteresis loop closest to the mid-life. Currently there is no universal method for determining the plastic strain range

The Becker friction vacuum gauge is based on the measurement of the damping of mechanical vibrations of a metal ribbon caused by the surrounding gas. The lower limit of the pressure measurement range depends mainly on the internal damping in the material of the vibrating element. This damping is inf
